Current Context: Researchers from Europe and the United States calculated the national contribution to warming due to greenhouse gases such as CO2, CH4 and N2O from the 1850s to 2021.

  • Global warming causes climate change which poses a serious threat to life on Earth in the forms of widespread flooding and extreme weather. Changes to near-surface air temperatures will likely influence ecosystem functioning and thus the biodiversity of plants, animals, and other forms of life12. Climate change will also worsen a range of risks to infrastructure, health, agriculture, forestry, transportation, air and water quality3.   • The United States topped the list with a 0.28 °C (17.3%) rise in temperature. China ranked second with 0.20 °C (12.3 percent) of warming, Russia third at 0.10 °C (6.1 percent), Brazil fourth at 0.08 °C (4.9 percent) and India fifth at 0.08 °C (4.8 percent).
  • The other countries in the top 10 list are China, the United States, Russia, Brazil, Indonesia, Japan, Iran, Germany and South Korea.
