Current Context: The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TDCO) has developed a system called Tamil Nadu Regional Aerial Connectivity Through Helicopters
Tamil Nadu government launches 'TN Reach' initiative
  • Through this TDCO the government will provide the intercity and town connectivity using 80 helipads.
  • In order to implement this scheme, the government has assigned this responsibility to Tamil Nadu Industrial Coorporation (TIDCO).
  • At present air connectivity is available only to five cities - Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai and Thoothukudi.
  • According to Thangam Thennarasu, Industries Minister of Tamil Nadu, TN Reach will set up a network of air routes within a state that will facilitate people to travel between cities and towns using helicopters.
  • Additionally, a robust helicopter service can prove particularly beneficial in emergency situations where time is of the essence.
  • This mechanism will rely on two existing initiatives – Heli Disha, which is an administrative manual for helicopter operations, and Heli Seva, which is an online portal for providing landing clearance for helicopter operations.
