Centre forms Steering committee to Review, monitor Cheetah Translocation project

Current Context: The Cheetah Project Steering Committee was formed by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) to review, progress, monitor and advice on the Cheetah introduction to the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department and NTCA.

  • The committee was formed after the death of three cheetah cubs at the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. 
  • The cubs were among the eight cheetahs brought from Namibia under an ambitious project to reintroduce the species in India after 70 years.
  • The project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 17, 2022 at the Kuno National Park. Five more cheetahs were released into the wild before the monsoon in June 2023.
  • India and South Africa have also signed an MoU to transport a dozen cheetahs from South Africa to Kuno National Park in February 2023. 
  • The aim is to acquire 50 African cheetahs over the next 3-4 years
