WHO launches Global Network to detect and prevent Infectious disease threat

Current Context: World Health Organization (WHO) and its efforts to prevent infectious disease threats, the WHO has launched a global network called the International Pathogen Surveillance Network (IPSN) to help detect and respond to disease threats before they become epidemics and pandemics.

  • The network will use pathogen genomics to analyze the genetic code of viruses, bacteria and other disease-causing organisms to understand how they spread and how to treat them.
  • The network will also improve systems for collecting and analyzing samples, using these data to drive public health decision-making, and sharing that information more broadly.
  • The IPSN will have a secretariat within the WHO’s Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence.
