  • National:
    • German defence major Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and state-run Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Indian Navy’s (IN) P-75 India (P75I) Submarine Project in Mumbai, Maharashtra in the presence of German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius.

    • According to a data released by private economic think tank CMIE, the unemployment rate in India fell to 7.7% in May due to a decline in the labour participation at 441.9 million.
    • The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved a $148 million loan to support the Indian state of West Bengal in harnessing surface and ground water through better irrigation practices that will benefit people in rural areas.
    • The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as the fourth largest investor in India during 2022-23 according to government data.
    • The Los Angeles Zoo is likely to soon get directly involved in the ongoing conservation efforts of gharials in Gandak river in West Champaran district.
    • W20 summit will begin on June 15th, 2023 at Mahabalipuram near Chennai. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually address the inaugural session and union minister for women and child development Smriti Irani will deliver the keynote address.
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi distributed over 70 thousand appointment letters to newly inducted recruits under the government’s Rozgar Mela initiative via video conferencing.
    • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has announced a monthly pension of Rs. 10,000 for the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awardees from the state.
  • Economy:
    • India’s retail inflation eased further in May to a 20-month low of 4.25%, from 4.7% in April, with price rise in food items faced by consumers moderating to 2.91%.
    • India’s factory output grew 4.2% year-on-year in April 2023 as against 1.1% in the previous month, according to data released by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
    • Reserve Bank of India has allowed banks to go for compromise settlement of fraud accounts and wilful defaults in order to ensure maximum recovery from distressed assets.
  • World:
    • North Korea has seized upon Russia’s international isolation following President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine to foster closer ties.
    • The United States has decided to rejoin the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and pay more than $600 million in back dues after a decade-long dispute sparked by the organisation’s move to include Palestine as a member.
  • Sports:
    • Novak Djokovic won his record 23rd Grand Slam singles title by defeating Casper Ruud 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-5 in the French Open final on Sunday. This win broke a tie with Rafael Nadal for the most Grand Slam titles by a man.
    • PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy were the big winners on a mixed first day for India at the Indonesia Open 2023. Sindhu and Prannoy made a winning start while the women’s doubles pair of reesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand suffered an early exit.
    • The Australia men’s cricket team captained by Pat Cummins defeated the Indian men’s cricket team captained by Rohit Sharma by 209 runs in the finals to win the 2nd edition of International Cricket Council (ICC) World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23.
    • India’s Murali Sreeshankar finished third in the men’s long jump event at the Paris Diamond League 2023 with an impressive 8.09m attempt. This was his second appearance in the Diamond League.
  • Important Days:
    • World Day Against Child Labour is observed on June 12th every year by all United Nations member countries to raise awareness about the need to end child labour. The theme for World Day Against Child Labour in 2023 is ‘Social Justice for All. End Child Labour.
    • International Archives Day is celebrated on June 9th every year to commemorate the date when the International Council on Archives (ICA) was established under the auspices of UNESCO in 1948.
  • Appointments:
    • IAS officers Amit Agrawal and Subodh Kumar Singh have been appointed as CEO of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and Director-General of the National Testing Agency (NTA), respectively, as part of a bureaucratic reshuffle effected by the Centre.
  • Obituary:
    • Silvio Berlusconi, the former Prime Minister of Italy and media magnet passed away on 12 June 2023 at the age of 86 due to complications from a severe form of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia.He was one of Italy’s most flamboyant politicians and led three governments between 1994 and 2011.
