    • Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (UCSL), the wholly owned subsidiary of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), has won an international order from Norway-based Wilson Shipowning AS for the design and construction of six new generation diesel-electric 3800 DWT general cargo vessels.
    • On June 17, 2023, Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, conferred the 4th National Water Awards, 2022 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on 41 winners in 11 categories for their exemplary work in the field of water conservation and managementMadhya Pradesh (MP) topped the Best State category which is followed by Odisha at 2nd position and Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Bihar at 3rd position joint.
    • Max Life Insurance Company Limited (Max Life) has picked a 2.99% equity stake in Jalandhar-headquartered Capital Small Finance Bank (CSFB) for a consideration of 49.50 crore.
    • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy recently successfully demonstrated the transfer of command and control capabilities (C2) of the Tactical Aerial Platform for Advanced Surveillance – Beyond Horizon 201 (TAPAS BH-201) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) from a remotely situated ground station to onboard the INS Subhadra, a warship located 148 kilometres from the Karwar naval installation.
    • India has gifted the indigenously-built in-service missile corvette INS Kirpan to Vietnam to enhance that country’s naval capabilities.
    • A Mesolithic period rock painting depicting a person tilling a piece of land has been found in Orvakallu village in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh.
  • Economy:
    • The provisional payroll data of ESIC reveals that 17.88 lakh new employees have been added in the month of April 2023. Around 30,249 new establishments have been registered and brought under the social security umbrella of the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation in the month of April 2023.
    • The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended adding a section in the Indian Telecommunication Bill, 2022, to promote, protect and prioritize submarine cables and cable landing stations (CLS) since they are critical assets.
    • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has prepared a 10-point action plan for strengthening cyber security in financial transactions.
  • World:
    • The Indian Embassy in the Sultanate of Oman has introduced an innovative video called ‘Soulful Yoga, Serene Oman’ on the eve of the International Day of Yoga 2023.
    • United Nations has adopted its first legally binding treaty to protect marine life in international waters. The treaty is called the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty, also known as the High Seas Treaty.
    • The United Arab Emirates and Qatar have reopened their respective embassies in Abu Dhabi and Doha, respectively, as of Monday, June 19, 2023. This marks the restoration of diplomatic ties between the two countries, which had been severed in 2017.
  • Sports:
    • Indian fencer C A Bhavani Devi created history by securing India’s first-ever medal at the Asian Fencing Championships in Wuxi, China.
    • Max Verstappen of Red Bull won the Canadian Grand Prix after starting from pole position. With this win, he equaled the career total of 41 victories held by Ayrton Senna.
    • Indian badminton stars Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty made history by winning the Indonesia Open 2023 men’s doubles final. They beat Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik 21-17, 21-18.
    • India won the Intercontinental Cup after defeating Lebanon by two goals in the second half at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on June 18, 20231. This was India’s first victory over Lebanon since 1977.
  • Important Days:
    • International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict is observed every year on June 19 to highlight the issue of conflict-related sexual violence and inspire efforts to prevent it. The theme for this year’s is 'bridging the gender digital divide to prevent, address and respond to conflict-related sexual violence.
    • National Reading Day is annually observed across the globe on 19th June to mark the death anniversary of Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker (PN Panicker), who is fondly known as the Father of the Library Movement in Kerala.
    • Sustainable Gastronomy Day takes place on June 18 every year and highlights the important role that food plays in promoting sustainable development and the crucial choices about what we eat. The theme for this year’s celebrations is ‘Local Flavours, Preserving Global Heritage’.
    • Autistic Pride Day is observed on June 18 every year. It serves as a platform to raise awareness about autism, a complex developmental disorder that affects communication and social interaction.

    • Aalok Kumar, Corporate Officer & Sr VP - Head of the Global Smart City Business at NEC Corporation, and President & CEO of NEC Corporation India, has been appointed as a member of the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) High-level Advisory Group on Digital Technology for Development with effect from May 1, 2023.
    • U Saravanan has been appointed as the new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of National Fertilizers Ltd (NFL). His appointment is effective from June 161. Prior to this, he was serving as CMD of another fertilizer CPSE, Madras Fertilizers Ltd.
