  • National:

    • According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO)’s 11th edition ‘World of Work’, the global unemployment is projected to fall below pre-pandemic levels to 191 million, corresponding to an unemployment rate of 5.3% in 2023
    • The government has extended the tenure of Atul Verma as the Director General of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for three months. The Director General (DG) office is the investigation arm of the fair trade regulator
    • The Indian Navy’s MH-60 Romeo helicopter successfully landed on the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant for the first time, marking a key milestone. The Indian Navy released a video of the successful maiden landing of the US-made MH-60R chopper, describing it as a significant boost to its anti-submarine warfare and fleet support capabilities
    • Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot announced waiving charges for the first 100 units of electricity for all households irrespective of their total consumption per month. This announcement was made ahead of the Assembly election later this year
    • Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft has reached the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota from where it is most likely to be launched next month. After the final assembly of payloads at the U.R. Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru, the spacecraft for India’s third moon mission has reached Sriharikota
    • The High Court of Karnataka has upheld the constitutional validity of Section 37A of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999
    • Telangana is celebrating its 10th year of formation on June 2nd. The state government has decided to celebrate the occasion on a grand scale for 21 days. Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao hoisted the national flag and paid tribute to the Telangana martyrs
  • Economy:
    • The revenue from Goods and Services Tax (GST) crossed Rs 1.57 lakh crore in May for the fifth time since the inception of GST. This was the 14th successive month that GST revenues exceeded Rs 1.4 lakh crore.
    • According to an S&P Global survey, the seasonally adjusted S&P Global India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose from 57.2 in April to 58.7 in May. This indicates the strongest improvement in the health of the sector since October 2020
    • Uttar Pradesh government has launched a 15-day registration campaign for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in all 75 districts across the state. The campaign aims to register about 14 lakh MSMEs which are currently not registered with the Udyam platform
  • Sports:
    • Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen dominated his quarterfinal match against Malaysia’s Leong Jun Hao at the Thailand Open Super 500 tournament in Bangkok. He sealed his victory with a powerful jump smash, securing a straight game win of 21-19, 21-11
    • The Indian hockey team defeated Pakistan 2-1 in the final of the Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex Stadium in Salalah, Oman. With this win, India has become the most successful country in the history of the Men’s Junior Asia Cup
  • Obituary:
    • Padma Shri awardee and Sanskrit Scholar Ved Kumari Ghai passed away. The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, expressed deep grief over her demise and tweeted that she was a stalwart of Sanskrit literature and her immense contributions enriched our cultural heritage

    • World Milk Day is celebrated on June 1st every year. It was established by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in 2001 to recognize the importance of milk as a global food and to celebrate the dairy sector.The theme for World Milk Day 2023 is “Enjoy Dairy”
    • Global Day of Parents is observed every year on June 1st to celebrate the crucial role of parents in their children’s lives and promote the importance of parental guidance and support for families worldwide.The theme for Global Day of Parents 2023 is “The power of parenting: raising happy, healthy and hopeful children”.
  • Appointments:
    • Ajay Yadav, a 2005 batch IAS officer of the Bihar cadre, has been appointed as the Managing Director of Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI)
    • K Krithivasan has taken over as the CEO and MD of TCS from Rajesh Gopinathan who resigned this week. Krithivasan was the President and Global Head of the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance Business Group at TCS before being elevated to the role of CEO and MD
    • Amarendu Prakash has taken over as the Chairman of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) on May 31, 2023. He succeeds Soma Mondal, who retired from the post on April 30, 2023
