    • According to the 8th edition of India Rankings (India Ranking 2023), prepared by Ministry of Education (MoE) based on parameters defined by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has topped the list for the 5th consecutive time in the “Overall Category”

    • Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan released the UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2023, which will replace the 2019 guidelines. The new rules are built on the principle of a “light but tight” regulatory framework envisioned in the National Education Policy 2020
    • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released its annual report for 2022-23. The report sheds light on different aspects of the Indian economy, ranging from GDP growth to inflation
    • Three Chinese astronauts have returned to Earth after completing a six-month mission aboard China’s space station. They left for space on 5 June to oversee the final construction stage of the Tiangong space station, which was completed in November
    • Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the Spanish Grand Prix on June 4, 2023. It was his fifth win of the season and the 40th of his career. He started from pole position and led from start to finish
    • Aravindh Chithambaram won the 23rd Dubai Open 2023 for the second consecutive year . He remained undefeated on both occasions . This performance of his brought him closer to 2650 Elo rating
    • President Droupadi Murmu has been decorated with the highest civilian honour of Suriname - The Grand Order of the Chain of Yellow Star. She received the honor from the President of the Republic of Suriname, Chandrikapersad Santokhi
    • The Indian Railways has decided to secure its ‘goomties’, the small cabins that house signalling equipment on railway station premises, with a ‘double-lock’ arrangement
    • The Tamil Nadu Forest Department officials successfully tranquillised wild elephant Arikompan, also known as Arisikompan, at Uthamapalayam in the Chinna Ovulapuram reserve forest in Theni district
    • Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan commissioned the first phase of the project Kerala Fibre Optic Network (K-FON). K-FON is a public-funded initiative by the Kerala government that aims to provide high-speed Internet connectivity to the whole Indian state of Kerala
    • June 5th 2023, Mr. Shaktikanta Das, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor, launched a financial inclusion dashboard named ‘Antardrishti’. The dashboard will provide the required insight to assess and monitor the progress of financial inclusion by capturing relevant parameters
    • National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) recently released its inaugural ‘Sustainability Report for FY 2021-22’. The report highlights NHAI’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its efforts in promoting social responsibility

    • India and the United States have concluded a roadmap for defence industry cooperation for the next few years. The roadmap was finalised at a meeting between visiting U.S. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh
    • Iran has officially reopened its embassy in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, following a deal to re-establish ties and ease a long rivalry that fuelled conflicts across the Middle East. The move comes in accordance with a China-brokered agreement between Tehran and Riyadh

    • India’s Siddharth Choudhary clinched gold in men’s shot put with a personal best throw of 19.52m at the Under 20 Asian Athletics Championships in Yecheon, South Korea
  • Important Day:
    • The International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing is observed on June 5th every year. It was proposed by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean of the FAO in 2015 and endorsed by the FAO Committee on Fisheries
    • World Day Against Speciesism is observed every year on June 5. Its main goal is to remind people that speciesism, like racism or sexism, has no place in a civilized society
  • Obituary:
    • Jim Hines, the Olympic champion in track and field who became the first person to run the 100-meter dash in under 10 seconds, passed away on June 3, 2023 at the age of 76. He was a two-time Olympic gold medalist and his world record time of 9.95 seconds lasted for 15 years until it was broken in 1983
    • Sulochana Latkar passed away at the age of 94 on June 4, 2023. She was known for her work in both Hindi and Marathi cinema and had acted in more than 250 Marathi films. She was honored with the Padma Shri Award in 1999
    • Manoj Misra was a renowned environmental activist and former Indian Forest Service officer who passed away at the age of 68 due to COVID-19 complications. He was the founder of the Yamuna Jiye Abhiyan, a movement dedicated to the revival of the Yamuna river
