  • National:
    • Union Cabinet has approved the Jan Vishwas Bill, which aims to amend 42 laws, bringing significant changes to the regulatory framework for entrepreneurs in India.

    • The Standing Committee on Economic Statistics (SCES), which was set up in late 2019 to examine economic indicators only, has been replaced by the Standing Committee on Statistics (SCoS).
    • The European Investment Bank (EIB) has announced its support for India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission by offering a loan facility of up to €1 billion. The loan aims to assist India in developing its nascent green hydrogen ecosystem and renewable energy projects
    • Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav released a book on the importance of the mangrove ecosystem authored by scientists from the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF).
  • Economy:
    • A total of 20.23 lakh new employees have been added to the Employees’ State Insurance Scheme in May 2023. Around 24,886 new establishments have been registered and brought under the social security umbrella of the ESIC in the month of May 2023.
    • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is expected to issue a standard operating procedure (SOP) for banks to issue proofs of inward remittances for exporters expeditiously. This move aims to address the challenges faced by exporters in the rupee-based trading mechanism for foreign trade.
    • Ashok Leyland, an automotive subsidiary of the Hinduja Group, has bagged orders worth Rs 800 crore from the Indian Army.
  • Sports:
    • Carlos Alcaraz, the World No. 1, captured his second Grand Slam title after beating Novak Djokovic 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in the 2023 Wimbledon men’s final. It was his first Wimbledon title and he is the youngest player ever to be ranked the ATP No.1 in the world
    • India shooter Prithviraj Tondaiman bagged the bronze medal in the men’s trap event at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup Lonato 2023 in Italy on July 16 Sunday. Prithviraj Tondaiman’s bronze was India’s only medal at the Lonato shooting meet.
    • 136th edition of The Wimbledon Championships (Wimbledon) 2023 took place from 3rd July to 16th July 2023 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom
    • India finished third with a total of 27 medals at the Asian Athletics Championships held in Bangkok, Thailand . The Indian contingent won 6 gold, 12 silver, and 9 bronze medals
    • The six-member Indian team at the 64th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2023 held at Chiba, Japan secured 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze medals and finished 9th out of 112 countries
    • England beat Spain to win the Men’s 2023 UEFA European U21 Championship title after a late penalty drama. Palmer’s free-kick deflected off team-mate Jones to give Young Lions victory. England keeper Trafford saved 99th-minute penalty in dramatic finale
  • Appointments:
    • The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has appointed Braj Raj Sharma as the State Election Commissioner for Jammu and Kashmir. He is a retired IAS Officer and will hold the position of State Election Commissioner till he attains the age of sixty-five years.
  • International Days:
    • The Day of International Criminal Justice is annually observed across the globe by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on 17th July to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute (1998), the founding treaty of the ICC. Theme for the Day of International Criminal Justice 2023 is "Overcoming Barriers and Unleashing Opportunities for Social Justice".
  • Obituary:
    • Mangala Narlikar, an eminent mathematician, passed away at the age of 80 after a long battle with cancer. She was the wife of noted astrophysicist Dr. Jayant Narlikar and carried out research in pure mathematics.
    • Oommen Chandy, the former Chief Minister of Kerala and a senior Congress leader, passed away in Bengaluru following a prolonged illness. He was 79 years old at the time of his passing. His funeral preparations have commenced in Thirunakkara Maidanam, his home.
