Google Pay introduced UPI LITE for Faster and Small Value Transactions

Current Context: Google Pay has launched UPI LITE, a feature that lets users make quick and simple UPI transactions without having to enter their UPI PIN, allowing them to make one-click transactions.

  • With UPI LITE, users can load their account with up to 2,000 twice a day, enabling instant UPI transactions of up to 2002. 
  • The UPI LITE feature was launched by the Reserve Bank of India in September 2022 to ease the UPI transaction process and is enabled by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Currently, 15 banks support UPI LITE, with more banks expected to join in the coming months.
To activate UPI LITE on Google Pay, you need to follow these steps:
    • Open the Google Pay app on your phone.
    • Locate and tap on the profile icon situated at the top right corner of the screen.
    • Scroll down to find the ‘UPI Lite’ feature.
    • Tap on ‘UPI Lite’ to proceed. This action will open a new screen displaying instructions and details about UPI Lite.
    • On the new screen, locate and tap on the ‘Activate UPI Lite’ option.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to link your bank account with UPI Lite.
    • Once you have completed the linking process, you will receive a confirmation message stating that UPI Lite has been successfully activated.
    • You can now add funds to your UPI Lite account, with a maximum limit of ₹2,000
