TKMS Signs MoU With MDL to Modernise INS SHANKUSH Submarine

Current Context: Recent MoU signed by TKMS and MDL to modernise INS SHANKUSH submarine. The MoU signed by TKMS and MDL on July 27, 2023 is for the overhaul and modernisation of INS SHANKUSH to extend its operational capability for another ten years.

• INS SHANKUSH is the second submarine in a series of four HDW Class 209 Type 1500 boats that were delivered to the Indian Navy in the 1980s as part of a German-Indian cooperation
• The project is part of the Ministry of Defence’s contract worth ₹2,725-crore for the Medium Refit with Life Certification (MRLC) of all four submarines in this class.
• The modernisation process will involve supplying material packages of selected systems, equipment and components as well as providing on-site technical support and pressure hull inspection by TKMS, while MDL will act as general contractor up till on-time delivery of the submarine.
• The MoU also reaffirms the long-standing commitment of TKMS to India and represents another cornerstone in maintaining the operational capabilities of the Indian submarine fleet.
