TN & UK Govt Signs MoU to Set Up Botanical Garden in TN

Current Context: The MoU was signed on Thursday, July 27, 2023, as part of a slew of projects launched by the State government in partnership with the UK government. The botanical garden will be set up in Kadambur Village in Chengalpattu district, about 65 km from Chennai, in an area of 137.65 hectares at a cost of Rs 300 crores.

  • The MoU commits to Kew Gardens of London providing advice and expertise around landscape planning, plant collection development and botanical garden management.
  • The MoU was signed by Environment Minister Siva V. Meyyanathan and UK Minister of State for Climate Graham Stuart, who were in Chennai for the G20 Ministerial Meeting on Environment and Climate Sustainability.
  • The MoU is part of a strategic climate partnership between Tamil Nadu and the UK, which also includes projects to conserve mangroves, forests and wetlands, and to launch a green rating framework for industrial decarbonisation.
  • These projects aim to advance the State government’s climate change ambitions of achieving net zero before 2070.
