    • The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a contract with Visakhapatnam-based state-owned Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) for the acquisition of five Fleet Support Ships (FSS) of 44,000 tonnes for the Indian Navy at an overall cost of approximately 19,000 crore.

    • The Government of Canada hosted the 7th Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in Vancouver Convention Centre, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada from August 22-26, 2023. The assembly gathered environmental leaders from 185 countries.
    • India’s first space-based observatory, Aditya-L1, is set to launch on September 2, 2023, from Sriharikota. The mission is aimed at studying the Sun and providing insights into its dynamics and space weather.
    • President Droupadi Murmu released a Rs 100 commemorative coin on former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao on his centenary year at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre, in New Delhi on Monday.
  • Economy:
    • Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari unveiled the world’s first prototype of the BS 6 Stage II ‘Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicle developed by Toyota Kirloskar Motor. The ethanol-fueled variant of Toyota Innova will be the world’s first BS-VI (Stage-II) electrified flex-fuel vehicle.
    • Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has announced its plans to enter the insurance sector through Jio Financial Services (JFS), which will provide “simple, yet smart” life, general, and health insurance products through a digital interface.
  • World:
    • China has released a new official map in 2023, which shows the entire State of Arunachal Pradesh and the Aksai Chin region within China’s borders. The map also includes the nine-dash line and a tenth dash east of Taiwan, underlining Beijing’s claims over the island.
    • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reported that India’s Pragyan rover encountered a 4-meter diameter crater on the moon’s surface on August 27, 2023. The unexpected obstacle was detected just three meters ahead of the rover’s location, prompting an immediate change in its course.
  • Sports:
    • Indian badminton player HS Prannoy won a bronze medal at the BWF World Championships 2023 after losing his semi-final match on Saturday. He lost to Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn in a thrilling tie in Copenhagen.
    • Kishore Jena, an athlete from Odisha, represented India in the men’s javelin final at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest. Despite not winning a medal, he finished fifth with a personal best throw of 84.77m.
    • Kunlavut Vitidsarn claimed the gold medal at the 2023 BWF World Championships in Copenhagen on Sunday. The Thai shuttler defeated Kodai Naraoka in three sets 19-21, 21-18, 21-7 to win the gold.
  • Appointments:
    • Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa was re-elected for a second and final five-year term in results announced much earlier than expected. Mnangagwa secured 52.6 per cent of the vote, the Zimbabwe Election Commission said in an announcement.
  • Obituary:
    • Eminent Indian English poet Jayanta Mahapatra passed away on August 27, 2023, at the age of 95. Jayanta Mahapatra was the first Indian poet to win a Sahitya Akademi award for English poetry and was also conferred with the Padma Shri award in 2009.
