  • National:
    • on Wednesday, 26th July, 2023, an MoU was signed between Prof. Jon Paul Rodríguez, Chair—IUCN SSC and Mr. Vivek Menon, Executive Director, Wildlife Trust of India to set up the first-ever regional Center for Species Survival (CSS) in India.

    • The Union Education Ministry has constituted an expert committee to revisit its regulations and guidelines on anti-discrimination with respect to the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Other Backward Classes, Persons with Disabilities, and other minorities in higher educational institutions.
    • Project Tiger division has been merged with Project Elephant and a new division with the name ‘Project Tiger and Elephant Division’ has been created under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC).
    • According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the FAO All Rice Price Index rose 2.8% in July from a month ago, to an average of 129.7 points. This is the highest level in nearly 12 years.
    • Iraq has recently been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) for having eliminated trachoma as a public health problem. This makes Iraq the 18th country globally to have been validated by WHO for having eliminated trachoma as a public health problem.
    • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned a total amount of Rs 1,974.07 crore to the Rajasthan government under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) for the financial year 2023-24
    • Mastercard has introduced a new way of making online credit card payments, more convenient and secure for its debit and credit cardholders. Normally, customers must enter a three-digit number (CVC) from the back of the payment card to complete the transaction.
    • Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has signed a term contract with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) for the sale of crude oil from the Mumbai region.
    • Ambuja Cements, a part of the Adani Group, has announced the acquisition of Sanghi Industries (SIL) at an enterprise value of 5,000 crore.
    • The Sahitya Akademi, an autonomous body under the Union Culture Ministry, will bring out an anthology of poems with contributions from each of the G-20 nations to commemorate India’s presidency of the grouping
    • On August 5, 2023, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully inserted the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft into the lunar orbit1. The required manoeuvre was done from an ISRO facility in Bengaluru
    • A recent publication by the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) reveals that 5% of India’s bird species are endemic, meaning they are unique to the country and not found elsewhere1. The publication is titled “75 Endemic Birds of India” and was released on the 108th foundation day of the ZSI.

    • National Bone and Joint Day is observed every year on August 4th in India. This day was started by the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA) in 2012 to highlight the importance of strong bones and joints in people of all age groups.
  • Economy:
    • The Indian Finance Ministry has imposed a definitive anti-dumping duty on certain optical fibre imports from China, South Korea, and Indonesia to give some relief to the domestic optical fibre industry reeling under the adverse impact of low-price and low-quality imports.
  • World:
    • Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihamoni has appointed former Prime minister Hun Sen’s son – Hun Manet- as the new prime minister of the country.A royal decree was issued today by the King stating that he appoints Dr. Hun Manet as the prime minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia for the 7th mandate of the parliament.
    • India has provided financial assistance of Rs 45 crore to support Sri Lanka’s unique digital identity project. The project is considered a crucial step in Sri Lanka’s digitalisation programme which is being implemented through Indian grant assistance.
  • Sports:
    • On Friday, the 17-year-old Gukesh overtook India’s chess pioneer Viswanathan Anand in the live ratings, ranking ninth, ahead of Anand at 10. As a result, Gukesh replaced Anand as the World No. 9 in live rankings while the five-time World champion slipped to 10th.
    • Prarthana Thombare, in partnership with Anastasia Tikhonova, defeated Estelle Cascino and Diana Marcinkevica 3-6, 6-1, [10-7] in the doubles final of the $60,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament in Barcelona
    • India delivered a stunning performance against Malaysia in the Asian Champions Trophy 2023, securing a resounding 5-0 victory. The match, which took place at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, saw India rise to the top of the tournament table.
