Current Context: The Indian Railways and the IIT Madras have signed a MoU to establish the India 5G testbed at the IRISET in Secunderabad. This testbed will be dedicated to the testing and development of 5G use cases for the Indian Railways.

  • The aim is to leverage the potential of 5G technology to enhance the operational efficiency, passenger experience and overall safety of the railways.
  • High-speed data transmission that can enable real-time monitoring and control of trains, signalling systems, track conditions, security cameras, etc.
  • Enhanced mobility that can provide seamless and consistent connectivity for moving trains across different regions and networks.
  • The India 5G testbed is a collaborative project funded by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to a consortium of eight institutes, including IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, SAMEER, CEWiT, etc.
  • The testbed is based on an indigenous 5G solution that has been developed by these institutes. The testbed will also serve as a platform for research and innovation in 5G technology and applications for various sectors.
