Current Context: International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2023 is a special day to celebrate the diversity and resilience of the world’s indigenous peoples, who make up less than 5% of the global population, but account for 15% of the poorest and speak most of the world’s languages.

  • The theme for this year is “Indigenous youth as agents of change for self-determination”.
  • This theme recognizes the important role that indigenous youth play in promoting the rights, cultures, and traditions of their peoples, as well as in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity today, such as climate change, peacebuilding, and digital cooperation.
  • The Convention on Biological Diversity also celebrates this day and highlights the contributions of indigenous peoples to biodiversity conservation and sustainable use.
