Current Context: Collaboration between PNGRB and World Bank to develop a roadmap for hydrogen blending in natural gas. As hydrogen is considered to be a clean and renewable energy source that can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance energy security.

  • PNGRB is the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, which is the regulator of the natural gas sector in India.The World Bank is an international financial institution that provides loans and grants to low- and middle-income countries for various development projects.
  • PNGRB and World Bank have joined forces to prepare a comprehensive roadmap for hydrogen blending in natural gas and their transmission through gas pipelines in the country.
  • The study will cover aspects such as mapping demand and supply of hydrogen, technical assessment of the existing pipeline network for its compatibility, commercial assessment of pipeline sector, identifying bottlenecks in policy and regulatory framework, and framing of roadmap till 2040 for expeditious implementation of hydrogen blending in India.
  • The regulatory frameworks will be amended to help achieve the national target of 5 million metric tonnes per annum of hydrogen consumption by 2030.
