Current Context: The Union Cabinet has recently approved a scheme called ‘PM-eBus Sewa’ to add 10,000 electric buses to city bus services across the country. The scheme aims to enhance green mobility and reduce carbon emissions from the transport sector.

  • The scheme will have an estimated cost of Rs 57,613 crore, out of which Rs 20,000 crore will be provided by the central government and the remaining will be borne by the states.
  • Under the augmentation segment, the e-buses will operate under the PPP model and the government will help develop associated infrastructure to provide support for development/upgradation of depot infrastructure.
  • Under the green urban mobility initiatives segment, bus rapid transport projects would be developed along with non-motorised infrastructure like bike sharing, bicycle lanes.
  • The government said the scheme will generate around 45,000-55,000 direct jobs. The scheme would also help India achieve its objectives concerning climate change and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. The scheme is expected to continue till 2037.
