Current Context: The Bharatiya Prakash Sthamb Utsav or Indian Lighthouse Festival is a celebration of India’s maritime heritage and culture through its 75 iconic lighthouses.

  • The festival was inaugurated by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at the historic Fort Aguada in Panjim, Goa.
  • The festival aims to develop the lighthouses into major tourist destinations and educational and cultural hubs with the help of public-private partnership.
  • The festival also marks the enactment of the Marine Aids to Navigation Act, 2021, which provides a framework for the development, maintenance and management of aids to navigation in India.
  • The festival is a tribute to the rich and glorious maritime history of India and its lighthouses that have served as silent sentinels of the coastlines for centuries.
