Current Context: Sanchi is a World Heritage Site that is famous for its ancient Buddhist monuments, especially the Sanchi Stupa. It is located in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, a state in central India.

  • Sanchi has become India’s first solar city, which means that it produces more energy from solar power than it consumes from conventional sources.This is a remarkable achievement for a town that has a history of over 2,000 years.
  • The solar city project in Sanchi was launched by the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, on September 6, 2023.
  • It consists of a 3 MW solar plant near the Sanchi Stupa, which meets the electricity needs of the town, and another 5 MW solar plant in Gulgaon, which supplies power to the agricultural sector.
  • The project will reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by 13,747 tonnes, which is equivalent to planting over 2,38,000 tree.
