TN CM Launches Women’s Rights Grant Scheme

Current Context: A social welfare scheme launched by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on September 15, 2023. The scheme is called Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thittam (Kalaignar Women’s Rights Grant Scheme) and it aims to provide monthly financial support of Rs 1,000 to eligible women heads of the family.

  • The funds will be directly deposited into their scheme-linked bank accounts and they can withdraw the cash with ATM cards issued to them.
  • The scheme is a promise made by the DMK in their manifesto during the run-up to Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2021.
  • The state government allocated Rs 7,000 crore in the budget 2023-24 for the implementation of the scheme. The scheme is also a tribute to the legacy of former CM CN Annadurai, as it coincides with his birth anniversary.
  • The scheme excludes women who work for banks, income taxpayers, professional taxpayers, pensioners, elected members of municipal authorities, and public sector undertakings (PSUs), as well as workers of state and federal governments and PSUs.
