Union Minister Parshottam Rupala Launches Shrimp Crop Insurance Scheme

Current Context: The shrimp crop insurance scheme is a new initiative by the Agricultural Insurance Company of India (AIC) in collaboration with the ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIBA) to provide insurance coverage for shrimp farming.

• The scheme was launched by Rupala on September 14, 2023 at the second edition of ICAR-CIBA’s Shrimp Farmers Conclave in Navsari, Gujarat.
• The scheme aims to enhance the security and confidence of shrimp farmers and boost India’s position as a global leader in shrimp production.
• The scheme covers various species of shrimps such as black tiger prawn, white leg shrimp, scampi and others. The insurance cover starts from the initial stage to 130 days till the shrimps are ready.
• The scheme is expected to benefit lakhs of coastal shrimp farmers who face various risks such as diseases, natural calamities, market fluctuations and other uncertainties.
• The scheme is also aligned with the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampadan Yojana, which is a flagship programme of the government for the sustainable development of the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
