Current Context: The ferry service between India and Sri Lanka was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ranil Wickremesinghe on October 14, 2023.The ferry service was suspended for nearly 40 years due to the civil war in Sri Lanka.
Ferry service between India and Sri Lanka started from Nagapattinam to Kankesanthurai
  • It is a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity, tourism, trade, and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
  • The high-speed craft Cheriyapani can accommodate 150 passengers on board, and will ply from Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu to Kankesanthurai in the northern province of Sri Lanka, a four-hour journey.
  • The fare for the ferry service is ₹3,000 per person for economy class and ₹6,000 per person for business class. The ferry service will operate twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
