Current Context: According to the latest report, India has surged an impressive 72 places higher and now holds the 47th position in the Ookla Speedtest Global Index. This remarkable feat is attributed to the recent launch of 5G services within the country.

  • India has made significant strides in mobile download speed rankings, securing a position within the top 50.The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is ranked first in the world for mobile internet speed.
  • India’s download speed performance has surged by 3.59 times since the introduction of 5G, with median download speeds improving from 13.87 Mbps in September 2022 to an impressive 50.21 Mbps in August 2023.
  • This enhancement in download speeds propelled India’s elevation in the Speedtest Global Index, propelling it from the 119th position to a commendable 47th position.
  • This puts India ahead of its neighbors like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, but also some G20 countries, such as Mexico (90th), Turkey (68th), the UK (62nd), Japan (58th), Brazil (50th place), and South Africa (48th place).
