Meghalaya CM Launches ‘Water Smart Kid Meghalaya’ Campaign

Current Context: The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Kongkal Sangma, launched the ‘Water Smart Kid Meghalaya’ campaign on November 8, 2023.
  • This initiative is part of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and aims to create awareness about water conservation among children.
  • During the launch, Sangma shared that Meghalaya receives about 63 billion cubic litres of water annually through rainfall.
  • However, the state is only able to retain 1 billion cubic litres of water.
  • He mentioned that of the total water received, 31 billion cubic litres flow to Bangladesh and another 31 billion cubic litres flow to Assam.
  • To address the issue of water conservation and sustainability, the State Government has taken various interventions, which are supported by externally aided projects (EAPs) and the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India.
  • During the event, the Chief Minister and Public Health Engineering (PHE) minister, Marcuise Marak, handed over the awards to Water Guardians for their inspiring efforts in the conservation of water bodies.
  • The awards were given to Lumshyiap Village and Water Sanitation Community of Ri Bhoi District, Darechikgre Village and Water Sanitation Community of West Garo Hills District, and Dura Kantragre Village and Water Sanitation Community of West Garo Hills District.
