Current Context: On February 19, 2024, the Department of Fisheries and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Krishi Bhawan in New Delhi.

  • This collaboration aims to promote digital marketing of fish and other aquatic produce, providing a digital platform to empower stakeholders in the fisheries sector.
  • This MoU was signed by Union Minister Shri Parshottam Rupala, Minister of State Dr. L Murugan, Secretary (Fisheries) Dr Abhilaksh Likhi, Joint Secretary (Inland Fisheries) Shri Sagar Mehra, and ONDC’s Managing Director Shri. T. Koshy.
  • The initiative is expected to bring numerous benefits such as reduced transaction costs, increased market reach, improved transparency, and employment generation.
  • Union Minister Shri Parshottam Rupala emphasized the need for automation in the value chain and fish processing units, believing that this collaboration will unlock the potential of digital commerce in the Indian Fisheries sector.
