Current Context: Uttar Pradesh has indeed become the first state in India to issue 5 crore Ayushman cards under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) on 2nd march 2024.

  • For those who may not be familiar, Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY is a flagship scheme of the Government of India, launched to achieve the vision of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
  • This initiative has been designed to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and its underlying commitment, which is to “leave no one behind.”
  • Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY aims at providing a health cover of Rs. 5 lakhs per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to over 12 crores poor and vulnerable families (approximately 55 crore beneficiaries) that form the bottom 40% of the Indian population .
  • This achievement by Uttar Pradesh is a significant milestone in ensuring the health and well-being of every individual in the state.
  • The state has issued 1.94 crore cards through the ‘Ayushman Bhav’ campaign and the average daily admission of patients under this scheme has increased from 2,000 to approximately 8,000 per day .
  • More than 5,000 private and government hospitals have been enlisted for treatment under this scheme in Uttar Pradesh.
