  • National:
    • On May 30, 2024, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in India introduced a new numbering series, 160xxxxxxx, for service and transactional calls. This series will be used exclusively by Principle Entities like Financial Institutions. The initiative aims to help citizens easily identify legitimate calls and reduce the risk of scams.

    • The FSSAI issued a directive on June 4, 2024, requiring all Food Business Operators to remove ‘100% fruit juice’ claims from reconstituted fruit juice labels and ads. This is due to the misleading nature of these claims, as these juices are not entirely made of fruit. FBOs have until September 1, 2024, to use up existing pre-printed packaging materials.
    • As of June 2, 2024, Hyderabad is solely the capital of Telangana. Andhra Pradesh has adopted a three-capital plan with Visakhapatnam as the executive capital, Amaravati as the legislative capital, and Kurnool as the judicial capital. There are ongoing disputes over this plan.
  • International:
    • Chinese researchers have successfully transplanted a genetically modified pig liver into a living human patient with advanced liver cancer. The procedure took place on May 17, 2024, at the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, China.
  • Banking:
    • The State Bank of India (SBI) crossed a market capitalization of Rs 8 lakh crore on June 3, 2024. This milestone was achieved when the SBI stock hit a 52-week high. SBI became the seventh Indian listed company to reach this market cap, and the sixth biggest company in terms of market cap.
  • Mous:
    • On June 3, 2024, the Department of School Education and the National Book Trust signed an MoU in New Delhi to establish the Rashtriya e-Pustakalaya, a digital library. This platform will host over 10,000 books in more than 100 languages, accessible round-the-clock. The initiative aims to enhance the accessibility of non-academic books for children and adolescents across India, promoting healthy reading habits and bridging the digital divide.
  • Science & Technology:
    • ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) developed a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software named PraVaHa on May 30, 2024. It’s used for aerodynamic design and analysis of various launch vehicles and re-entry vehicles, and has been extensively used in the Gaganyaan program.
  • Committee:
    • The Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC) at the Supreme Court of India, reconstituted on May 31, 2024, is a 12-member panel headed by Justice Hima Kohli. The committee’s purpose is to promote gender equality and address complaints of sexual harassment within the Supreme Court precincts. It conducts awareness programs and serves as an internal redressal forum for such complaints.
    • The National Level Coordination Committee (NLCC) for the World’s largest grain storage plan, chaired by Dr. Ashish Kumar Bhutani, held its first meeting on June 2, 2024. The meeting aimed to strategize the implementation of the project, which seeks to transform Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS) into Multi-Service Societies by creating various agricultural infrastructures.
  • Apps & Portals:
    • The All India Bank Employees’ Association (AIBEA) launched a website called ‘Bank Clinic’ on June 1, 2024. This platform aims to guide retail customers about their rights and remedies, helping them understand the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines on retail banking.
  • Appointments:
    • Businesswoman and investor Halla Tomasdottir has been elected as the new President of Iceland, winning the presidential election with 34.3% of the vote. She campaigned on issues such as the impact of social media on youth mental health, Iceland’s tourism development, and the role of artificial intelligence.
    • On June 3, 2024, Indian badminton player PV Sindhu invested in and became the brand ambassador for Greenday’s ‘Better Nutrition’. The startup aims to combat micronutrient deficiencies in India through biofortified foods. Sindhu’s investment is part of a Rs 4 crore round. The company plans to raise another Rs 4 crore.
