Current Context: India and Sri Lanka have indeed taken a significant step in enhancing their maritime security cooperation. On 20th June 2024, inaugurated a Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), which reflects their deepening ties in this area.

    • The MRCC was established through a $6 million grant from India and comprises two main centers:
      • The main center is located at the Sri Lanka Navy headquarters in Colombo.
      • The sub-center is situated in Hambantota.
  • Additionally, there are seven unmanned installations at strategic locations along Sri Lanka’s coastline: Galle, Arugambay, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Kallarawa, Point Pedro, and Mollikulam
  • The MRCC serves as the nerve center for search and rescue operations at sea.
  • Sri Lankan Navy teams have been trained to operate the MRCC by state-run Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in Bengaluru and Colombo.
