Current Context: On 25 November 2025, the United Nations (UN) released the Global Report on Gender-related Killings of Women and Girls (Femicide/Feminicide).
UN Warns of Alarming Rise in Femicide Worldwide
  • It was jointly prepared by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women).
  • The report revealed that in 2024, around 83,000 women and girls were intentionally killed worldwide.
  • Of these, 60% (50,000 victims) were killed by intimate partners or family members, making the home the most dangerous place.
  • This equals 137 women and girls killed every day, or one every 10 minutes globally.
  • The report stressed that despite global commitments, no significant progress has been made in reducing femicide.
  • It called for stronger laws, better data collection, and urgent community-level interventions to protect women and girls.
