National:

The Department of Consumer Affairs notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026 on 27 August 2026. The rules establish Indian Standard Time (IST) as the common time reference for legal, administrative, commercial and official purposes across India. They will come into force 180 days after publication and are important for synchronising banking, digital payments, telecom, transport and government systems.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on 29 August 2026 that the state's first ozone-based drinking-water treatment project would be established at Dehra in Kangra district at a cost of ₹46 crore. Ozone gas will be used for disinfection and improving water quality. The state plans to replicate similar treatment systems elsewhere after the Dehra project.
The National Test House celebrated its 115th Foundation Day on 29 August 2026 at its Jakkuru campus in Bengaluru, with Union Minister Pralhad Joshi as chief guest. New testing facilities, the new NTH Bengaluru building and the NTH Suvidha mobile app were part of the programme. Bihar and Jharkhand signed an MoU on 31 August 2026 in New Delhi for sharing the waters of the Sone River, resolving a long-running interstate dispute. A rare blue-violet flower resembling Neelakurinji was reported blooming in the Kudremukh hills of Karnataka on 31 August 2026. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced on 28 August 2026 that a dedicated women's university would be established in Bihar. Date correction: The Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024 actually came into effect on 15 May 2025, rather than becoming effective in August 2026. It created the Greater Bengaluru Authority and introduced five city corporations to decentralise civic administration while maintaining coordinated metropolitan planning. The governance framework remains relevant in 2026 because the new corporations and their electoral arrangements are being operationalised.

International:

India and China reached an eight-point consensus on 25 August 2026 during the 25th Special Representatives' talks in Beijing, led by India's NSA Ajit Doval and China's Wang Yi. Both sides reaffirmed peace along the border, continued negotiations on the boundary question and measures to improve LAC management. The outcomes also cover additional military communication arrangements and broader border cooperation.
The 2026 Ramon Magsaysay Awards were announced on 31 August 2026 for Singaporean diplomat Tommy Koh, Myanmar human-rights activist Bo Kyi and Bangladeshi humanitarian Runa Khan. Koh was recognised for diplomacy and international law, Bo Kyi for defending political prisoners, and Khan for humanitarian services to vulnerable communities. The formal presentation is scheduled for 15 November 2026 in Manila.
China and Bangladesh had agreed on 26 June 2026 to explore the creation of a 2+2 dialogue mechanism covering diplomacy and defence. They also agreed to establish a strategic dialogue between their foreign ministers. Therefore, this should be remembered as an agreement to explore a 2+2 mechanism, rather than as an already operational China-Bangladesh 2+2 dialogue.
Clashes erupted in Ceuta, Spain, on 27 August 2026 between police and protesters amid tensions following a large migrant influx from Morocco. Demonstrators attempted to prevent Red Cross vehicles from supplying food and water to migrants, while shelters and belongings were set on fire. Spain subsequently sought additional European assistance for processing and managing migrants in the North African enclave.
Date correction: Google began displaying Gulf of America instead of Gulf of Mexico for US users on 10 February 2025, following the change in the US Geographic Names Information System. Users in Mexico continue to see Gulf of Mexico, while users in other countries generally see both names. This is therefore an older 2025 development, not a new August 2026 event.

Economy:

India's GDP grew 7.8% year-on-year during Q1 FY27, April-June 2026, according to data released on 31 August 2026. Growth exceeded the market expectation of around 7.1% and the RBI projection of 7%. Strong consumption, investment, manufacturing and financial services supported expansion, demonstrating continued resilience of the Indian economy despite global geopolitical and energy-price risks.
Following the 7.8% Q1 FY27 GDP figure released on 31 August 2026, economists improved their outlook for India's full-year economic growth. Domestic consumption, government spending, private investment and improving rural demand remain important drivers. Several analysts now see growth of around or above 7% as achievable for FY27, although higher crude-oil prices, inflation and global geopolitical uncertainty remain major risks.
Government data highlighted on 18 August 2026 that India's coconut-product exports had risen 62% in FY2025-26 to ₹7,038.35 crore, compared with ₹4,349.03 crore in the previous year. Reports published on 30-31 August 2026 said Sri Lanka would lose the hosting rights for the inaugural ICC Women's T20 Champions Trophy 2027 because of governance concerns surrounding Sri Lanka Cricket. However, on 1 September 2026, Sri Lanka's Transformation Committee said it had not yet received formal ICC notification confirming the removal. Therefore, this should presently be treated as a developing story.
Lionel Messi announced his retirement from international football on 31 August 2026, ending a 21-year Argentina career. The 39-year-old finished as Argentina's record appearance-maker and goalscorer with 207 matches and 125 goals. Roman will study dark energy, dark matter, exoplanets and the evolution of the universe. Its infrared telescope combines sharp imagery with a field of view at least around 100 times larger than Hubble's.
ISRO is scheduled to launch EOS-05 aboard GSLV-F17 on 4 September 2026. The satellite is designed to strengthen India's geostationary Earth-observation capabilities and support applications such as weather monitoring, environmental assessment and disaster warning. Since the launch date is still upcoming, this should be written as a scheduled launch, not as a successfully completed mission.
The Government issued notifications for all six pillars of Semicon 2.0 on 31 August 2026, covering semiconductor design, machines and materials, fabrication plants, ATMP/OSAT packaging, R&D and talent development. The Union Cabinet had approved ₹1,27,500 crore for Semicon 2.0 on 15 July 2026 to strengthen India's complete semiconductor design and manufacturing ecosystem.
Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan launched Gnani Artha on 28 August 2026 at Uprashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. Developed by Gnani AI, the sovereign AI stack combines Evon 3.3, a large language model, with Plexus, an agentic AI platform. Evon 3.3 is a 30-billion-parameter open-weights model supporting 11 Indian languages and is intended for enterprises and public institutions.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated the first-of-its-kind Green Forge Complex at BRIC-NABI, Mohali, on 31 August 2026. The facility is designed to enable controlled simulation, cultivation and experimentation involving genetically modified crops. It will use advanced simulation and AI-supported technologies to strengthen agricultural biotechnology research and accelerate development of improved crop technologies.
Mahindra Aerostructures received an Airbus contract on 31 August 2026 to manufacture fuselage skins for sections 18 and 19 of the A320neo and A321XLR aircraft. The components will be produced at Mahindra's Bengaluru facility and supplied to Airbus in Augsburg, Germany. The contract expands India's participation in Airbus's global aerospace manufacturing supply chain.

Defence:

A report published on 30 August 2026 highlighted that the Indian Air Force was working with around 930 Indian firms to reduce dependence on imported aircraft spares. The IAF is also increasingly using technologies such as 3D printing and digital twins. Around 62,300 aircraft spares have reportedly been indigenised, strengthening maintenance capability and reducing reliance on foreign original-equipment manufacturers.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav performed the Bhoomi Pujan for the ₹472-crore T-Series Tank Overhaul Project at Vehicle Factory Jabalpur on 27 August 2026. The facility will overhaul T-72 and T-90 tanks and is planned to handle around 80 tanks annually, strengthening the Indian Army's operational readiness and domestic defence-maintenance capability.
The Indian Navy commissioned INS Nipun on 31 August 2026 at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. Nipun is the second indigenous Nistar-class Diving Support Vessel and was built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited. It is designed for deep-sea diving, underwater intervention and submarine-rescue operations, significantly enhancing India's specialised underwater operational capability and supporting the Aatmanirbhar Bharat objective in defence shipbuilding.
The 4th Tri-Services Future Warfare Course concluded on 30 August 2026 at Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi, after four weeks. Conducted under Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff and coordinated by CENJOWS, it involved Army, Navy and Air Force officers along with government, academia and industry. Subjects included AI, quantum technology, cyber warfare, autonomous systems, grey-zone warfare and multi-domain operations.

Summits & Conferences:

The 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, UNCCD COP17, was held from 17-28 August 2026 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, under the theme Restoring Land. Restoring Hope. Hosted by Mongolia, the conference brought together UNCCD's 197 Parties and other stakeholders to discuss land restoration, drought resilience, rangelands, water, food systems and pastoral communities.
Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan held their first meeting under the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement on 31 August 2026. The countries agreed to establish a permanent secretariat in Saudi Arabia to coordinate defence cooperation. The pact aims to improve collective deterrence, interoperability, defence production and strategic coordination among the three countries, with Pakistan initially providing the secretary-general.

MoUs Signed:

The Sports Authority of India, Badminton Association of India and Sports Authority of Assam signed a tripartite agreement on 29 August 2026 to establish the Northeast's first National Centre of Excellence for Swimming at Amingaon Sports Complex, Assam. The Olympic-size pool will support high-performance training and identification and development of talented swimmers from Assam and other northeastern states.
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board and Energy Efficiency Services Limited signed an MoU in late August 2026 to accelerate deployment of smart domestic PNG meters across India's City Gas Distribution sector. PNGRB will support standards and regulatory coordination, while EESL will aggregate demand, assess technologies and explore competitive procurement, installation and maintenance models.
Tata Advanced Systems Limited signed an MoU with the Javelin Joint Venture in late August 2026 to explore co-production of Javelin anti-tank guided missile All Up Rounds in India. The JJV comprises Raytheon, an RTX business, and Lockheed Martin. The agreement strengthens India-US defence-industrial cooperation and supports greater domestic production and integration of sophisticated missile systems.
The Haryana Government and OIL Green Energy Limited signed MoUs on 29 August 2026 for four integrated waste-to-energy plants in Hisar, Ambala, Faridabad and Gurugram clusters. The projects are designed to process around 5,000 tonnes of waste daily and generate 50 MW of power, with operations targeted to begin by October 2028.

Appointments:

HDFC Bank announced on 29 August 2026 that MD and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan would step down when his current term ends on 26 October 2026. Jagdishan has led India's largest private-sector bank since 2020. The bank has begun accelerating the process for selecting a successor, making this an important banking-sector leadership change for competitive exams.
Kissht appointed Sachin Tendulkar as its brand ambassador for three years on 27 August 2026 and launched the campaign Loans Without Any Hiccups. The RBI-registered NBFC is using the campaign to highlight fast, digital and paperless loan processing. For exam preparation, the key association is Sachin Tendulkar → Kissht → Brand Ambassador → three-year tenure.
Maharashtra Minister Ashish Shelar was unanimously elected President of the E-Sports Games Federation on 28 August 2026 at its board meeting in New Delhi. His candidature was proposed by ESGF founder and acting president Nandan Jha and chairperson Ashok Dhyanchand. ESGF works towards the development and promotion of esports and mind sports in India.
Apple had announced on 20 April 2026 that Tim Cook would step down as CEO, with the transition taking effect on 1 September 2026. John Ternus, previously Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, became Apple's CEO, while Cook moved to the role of Executive Chairman. The succession plan was unanimously approved by Apple's board.

Important Days:

The International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances was observed on 30 August 2026 under the slogan Victims first. Actions now. The 2026 observance also marked the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. The day promotes victims' rights to truth, justice and reparation and calls for stronger prevention of enforced disappearances.

Obituaries:

American author, poet, essayist and environmental thinker Wendell Berry died at the age of 92 on 31 August 2026 at his home in Port Royal, Kentucky. He was famous for works including The Unsettling of America and Nathan Coulter and for advocating sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, rural communities and a simpler relationship between people and the land.
