National:
- Indian Railways approved ₹170 crore for Kavach 4.0 on 1 September 2026 for the remaining 712 route kilometres of the Moradabad Division of Northern Railway. Kavach is India’s indigenous Automatic Train Protection system designed to prevent Signal Passing at Danger, control excessive speed and automatically apply brakes in unsafe situations. The project is part of the wider expansion of Kavach across the railway network to improve train safety and reduce collision risks.
- The Directorate General of Foreign Trade automated the issuance of Free Sale and Commerce Certificates from 31 August 2026 through its online portal. These certificates are issued under the Foreign Trade Policy for eligible products not covered by the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. Applications meeting prescribed parameters can now receive automatic approval without routine manual scrutiny, reducing processing time and compliance burden while retaining risk-based checks by DGFT Regional Authorities.
- India introduced its first uniform national minimum standards for mortuaries and post-mortem facilities on 30 August 2026. Finalised under the National Council for Clinical Establishments, the standards prescribe requirements for body identification, staffing, autopsy facilities and cold storage. Mortuaries should not be located in basements or near waste-disposal areas, while dead-body cold-storage facilities generally have to maintain temperatures between 4°C and 8°C.
- Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu inaugurated Phase-I of the Poola Subbaiah Veligonda Irrigation Project on 31 August 2026 in the Markapuram region. The project is designed to divert Krishna floodwaters towards drought-prone areas and improve irrigation and drinking-water availability in parts of Prakasam, Markapuram, Nellore and Kadapa. International:
- Türkiye became the 71st signatory to the Artemis Accords on 31 August 2026 during a ceremony at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Turkish Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır signed the accords in the presence of NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. Established in 2020, the Artemis Accords provide principles for peaceful, transparent, safe and sustainable civil exploration of the Moon, Mars and other celestial bodies. India and Denmark held the 4th Joint Working Group meeting on MSME development, innovation and intellectual property from 24-28 August 2026 in Copenhagen. The meeting involved India’s Ministry of MSME and the Danish Patent and Trademark Office. Discussions covered technology adoption, intellectual-property-led growth, commercialisation, entrepreneurship and cluster development, with the broader objective of strengthening institutional cooperation and improving innovation and competitiveness among MSMEs in both countries.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Uzbekistan from 29-30 August 2026 and held talks with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent. India and Uzbekistan elevated their relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and set a target of raising bilateral trade to US$5 billion by 2030. The two sides also discussed long-term uranium supplies, defence, critical minerals, digital public infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, space and investment cooperation.
- Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita visited Vietnam on 26-27 August and Lao PDR on 28-29 August 2026 as part of a wider official tour. In Vietnam, discussions reviewed the recently upgraded bilateral partnership, while the Lao PDR visit marked 70 years of India-Lao diplomatic relations and focused on development cooperation and longstanding political and cultural ties. His wider tour continued to Palau until 2 September.
Banking:
NPCI International Payments Ltd. and Uzbekistan’s National Interbank Processing Centre signed a commercial agreement on 30 August 2026 to enable UPI payments through Uzbekistan’s UZQR national interoperable QR system. Indian tourists, business travellers and students can use UPI-enabled applications to scan UZQR codes and make instant merchant payments in Uzbekistan. The partnership expands the international footprint of India’s Unified Payments Interface and was announced during Prime Minister Modi’s Uzbekistan visit.
Economy:
- India’s real GDP grew 7.8% in Q1 FY2026-27, April-June 2026, according to estimates released on 31 August 2026. The expansion exceeded the RBI’s earlier 7% projection and market expectations. Growth was supported by investment, manufacturing and strong services activity, particularly financial, real-estate and professional services. The figures indicated continued resilience in domestic demand despite global uncertainties, oil-price pressures and an uneven external economic environment.
- The National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange launched the RAINCHNNAI weather-derivatives futures contract on 31 August 2026 to help participants hedge financial risks arising from Chennai’s Northeast Monsoon rainfall. The cash-settled contract uses IMD rainfall data and a Cumulative Deviation Rainfall model. It complements NCDEX’s RAINMUMBAI product, extending exchange-traded rainfall-risk management across India’s major Southwest and Northeast Monsoon periods.
- SBI Research raised India’s FY27 real GDP growth forecast to 7.3% on 1 September 2026, up sharply from its earlier forecast of 6.6%. The revision followed stronger-than-expected Q1 FY27 GDP growth of 7.8%. SBI Research cited resilient domestic demand, services activity, manufacturing, credit demand, industrial production and investment spending as important factors supporting economic momentum through the remainder of the financial year.
- Controller General of Accounts data released at the end of August 2026 showed that Union Government total receipts reached ₹13.07 lakh crore during April-July FY27, representing about 35.8% of the Budget Estimate. Total expenditure stood at around ₹17.62 lakh crore, while the fiscal deficit was about ₹4.55 lakh crore or 26.8% of the full-year target, compared with 29.9% a year earlier.

China’s GJ-21 stealth unmanned combat aerial vehicle was reported undergoing flight testing in August 2026 as the country’s Type 076 amphibious assault ship Sichuan moved closer to sea trials. The roughly 40,000-tonne vessel incorporates an electromagnetic catapult capable of launching fixed-wing drones. The GJ-21-Type 076 combination could significantly expand China’s carrier-style unmanned naval aviation and long-range maritime strike capabilities.

- The 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit was held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, from 31 August to 1 September 2026 at the Yrys-Ordo Congress Hall. Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov chaired the meeting. The theme was 25 Years of the SCO: Together Towards Sustainable Peace, Development and Prosperity. - The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation and Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology signed an MoU on 31 August 2026 for research on a Predictive and Analytical Framework for Monthly Consumption Expenditures in India. The study will use Household Consumption Expenditure Survey data and AI-based methods to estimate Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure at national and state levels and support poverty estimation and economic planning.
- Bihar and Jharkhand signed an MoU on 31 August 2026 in New Delhi to resolve their long-pending dispute over sharing Sone River water. The agreement was signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil. Under the settlement, Bihar receives 5.75 million acre-feet and Jharkhand 2 MAF, supporting irrigation, drinking-water supply and cooperative interstate water management.
- The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment and Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission signed an MoU on 1 September 2026 in New Delhi to implement the Creating Intergenerational Bonding initiative.
