Current context: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to inaugurate India’s 2nd Multi-Modal Terminal at Sahibganj, Jharkhand on 12th September 2019.
India’s second Multi Modal Terminal 
  • It has been built in 2 years at a cost of 290 crores, on National Waterway -1 (river Ganga).
  • PM Modi had laid its foundation in April 2017.
  • The purpose of the terminal is to open up industries of Jharkhand and Bihar to the global market and improve connectivity between India and Nepal for movement of cargo through waterways route.
  • This will be the 2nd of the 3 MMTs being constructed on Ganga River. The 1st MMT was inaugurated by PM Modi on November 2018 at Varanasi.
  • The MMTs are built as part of the Jal Marg Vikas Project which aims to develop navigation of large vessels upto1500-2000 tonnes weight, on river Ganga between Varanasi to Haldia.
  • Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is the Implementing Agency of the MMT project.
