Current context: The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy has approved to enact the new law to protect women & children.
AP govt to bring New Laws to Protect Women & Children
  • The new laws made by the government include:
    1. Andhra Pradesh DISHA Act
    2. Andhra Pradesh Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 2019
    3. Andhra Pradesh Special Court for Specified Offences against Women and Children Act- 2019
  • The draft DISHA ACT contains the provision for harsher punishments, including death sentence, to those guilty of heinous crimes against women.
  • Once the bill is passed, Andhra Pradesh will become the first state in India to have capital punishment for rape cases.
  • The bill also seeks to complete the entire trail along within 21days of the FIR being filed.
  • The bill provides the death penalty for sexual abuse of children on the lines of POCSO Act, 2019.
  • Fast-track courts will be set up under the Andhra Pradesh Special Courts for Specified Crimes against Women and Children Act- 2019.
