Current Context: India and Russia has finalised their deal to manufacture AK-47 203 rifles.
- As per the deal, the AK-47 203 rifles will be manufactured in India under the guidance of Russia and the manufacturing will be the part of Make in India Initiative.
- To finalise the deal, India’s defence minister Rajnath Singh held the talks with counterpart Shoigu.
- The manufacturing will be held under a joint venture called Indo Russia Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL).
- The manufacturing of AK-47 203 rifles will take place at Uttar Pradesh’s Korwa Ordinance Factory.
- Costing of each AK-47 203 rifle is said to be around USD 1100 and is expected to replace Indian Small Arms System in the near future.
