Current Context: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled India’s first indigenously developed Driverless Metro Car.
India’s First Indigenously Developed Driverless Metro Car
  • It was unveiled at the BEML manufacturing facility in Bengaluru.
  • The country’s first Driverless Metro Car is manufactured at Bengaluru’s manufacturing facility of BEML for Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)’s MRS1 project.  
  • Total 576 Driverless Metro Cars are to be manufactured for MMRDA and will be supplied in January 2024. 
  • The Driverless Metro Car is having a stainless-steel body, equipped with CCTV surveillance and can carry 2280 passengers in 6 cars Metro train-set. It will be operating on the 25kv AC traction power supply.
  • In order to perform commissioning, testing and round-the-clock services of Driverless Metro cars, BEML has setup a Depot office at Charkop Metro Depot, MMRDA, Mumbai.
