Current Context: The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched the ‘Historic Urban Landscape Project’ of UNESCO.
‘Historic Urban Landscape Project’
  • It was launched for the city of Gwalior and Orchha of the state.
  • These cities are inducted under the project as the 8th and 9th cities in Asia Pacific Area.
  • Both the cities will be developed by UNESCO, GOI and Madhya Pradesh government.
  • The development of the cities will be made particularly by focusing on historical improvements and cultural improvements.
  • The management of these cities will be framed by UNESCO.
  • The project will enhance the tourism sector and will create employment opportunities in the state.
  • The UNESCO’s ‘Historic Urban Landscape Project’ was launched in 2011. The project aims to develop historical cities by maintaining their cultural, heritage value and historical values.
  • Other pilot cities from India in APA are Varanasi and Ajmer.
