Current Context: India and Maldives have signed a pact for the Greater Male Connectivity project (GMCP).
India signed pact with Maldives for Greater Male Connectivity Project
  • The GMCP is the largest civilian infrastructure project which is to be built in the Maldives.
  • The funding support for the project will be given by India.
  • India has granted USD 400 million Line of Credit (LoC) and USD 100 million for the vast GMCP project in Maldives.
  • The USD 400 million LoC will be provided by the Exim Bank.
  • The project will be constructed by AFCONS, which is India’s construction and engineering firm based in Mumbai.
  • The project is comprised of a 6.74 km long bridge and causeway link which will provide the connectivity between Male (Maldives capital) with three islands named, Villingili, Gulhifahu, and Thilafushi. The project will offer connectivity among business, people, industry and will enhance the economy of Maldives.
