FSSAI’s 3rd State Food Safety Index

Current Context: The Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Mansukh Mandaviya released the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)’s 3rd State Food Safety Index (SFSI).

• The index is the effort taken by GOI to provide safe and quality food to the Indians.
• The index measures the performance of all the Indian states in 5 parameters.
• The 5 parameters were: Human Resource and Institutional Data; Compliance; Food Testing (Infrastructure and Surveillance); Training and Capacity Building; Consumer Empowerment.
• The Union Minister also felicitated nine leading States/UTs for performing upto the mark as per the index standards.
• He also flagged off 19 Mobile Food Testing Vans (Food Safety on Wheels), which will supplement the food safety ecosystem in India. By doing so, the total number of Mobile Food Testing Vans went to 109.
• He also released e-books that describe recipes of various local seasonal food items, millets, and plant-based protein-rich ingredients.
• Winners for the larger states section: Gujarat, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu respectively.
• Winners for the smaller states section: Goa, Meghalaya, and Manipur respectively.
• Winners for the Union Territories section: Jammu and Kashmir, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and New Delhi respectively.
