‘Karbi Anglong Agreement’

Current Context: The centre signed the ‘Karbi Anglong Agreement’ which is a tripartite agreement with the representatives of Karbi outfits (Karbi are the ethnic community of Assam).
‘Karbi Anglong Agreement’
  • The agreement was signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
  • The delegation of six Karbi group members signed the agreement which includes Karbi People's Liberation Tigers (R), Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front, Karbi People's Liberation Tigers (Ceasefire), People's Democratic Council of Karbi Longri, Karbi People's Liberation Tigers (M) and United People's Liberations Army.
  • The agreement will help to maintain peace and prosperity in Assam and under the agreement all the conditions of the Karbi community will be fulfilled.
  • Under the agreement, Rs 1000 crore for development of the Karbi Anglong area in the next five years is sanctioned by the Assam government.
  • The agreement will also provide reservations for the people of Karbi and the setting up of the Karbi Welfare Council will take place.
  • The rehabilitation for the surrendered militants will also take place.
