    • Gustavo Petro took oath as Colombia's first ever leftist President. The 62-year-old is a former guerrilla and one-time mayor. He will replace Ivan Duque.
  • Banking and Finance
    • HDFC gets approval from National Housing Bank (NHB) for its merger with its subsidiary HDFC bank. The NHB has also approved the merger of two wholly owned subsidiaries, HDFC Investments and HDFC Holdings Limited of the housing finance company with HDFC. HDFC has already received approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), SEBI, NSE, and BSE for the merger.
    • India’s largest private lender State Bank of India has become the country’s first bank to come up with a policy to fund makers of the man-made stone that could provide a major boost to the lab-grown diamonds industry.
  • Sports
    • Uzbekistan to host Chess Olympiad 2026. Their young team is currently the leader of the ongoing Chess Olympiad in Chennai.

    • Nitish Kumar takes oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar for the eighth time at the Raj Bhavan. Tejashwi Yadav took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister.
    • Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was appointed as the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI) with effect from August 27. He will succeed N V Ramana who took oath as 48th CJI on April 24 last year.

    • International Telecommunication Union's Regional Standardization Forum for Asia and Oceania region will begin in New Delhi. The forum is themed 'Regulatory and Policy aspects of Telecommunications'. Minister of State for Communications Devusinh Chauhan will inaugurate the Regional Standardization Forum.
  • Sports
    • US tennis star Serena Williams announced their retirement from tennis. She was the first woman to win a Grand Slam tournament since Althea Gibson in the 1950s. She has won 23 Grand Slam titles.
  • Awards
    • Amrut Mody School of Management of Ahmedabad University professor Ramadhar Singh has reportedly been marked on the 'Heritage Wall of Fame' of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) in the United States, making him the only social psychologist from India to receive the honour.
    • Late Kannada film star Puneet Rajkumar will be conferred with the 'Kannada Ratna' award posthumously on November 1, on Kannada Rajyotsava (The state's formation day). He will be the 10th recipient of the state's highest civilian honour.

    • Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel rolls out 5,600 projects worth Rs 1,600 crore at an event in Dahod on the occasion of International day of the World's Indigenous People. The main event to mark the occasion also known as 'World Tribal Day' was held at Melaniya village of Dahod district.
    • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will launch 'Radio Jaighosh' to mark the anniversary of Kakori Train Action as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.
    • Maharashtra Governor Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari inaugurated the 22nd ‘Bharat Rang Mahotsav’ at Rabindra Natya Mandir in Mumbai. The five-day drama festival (being held from August 9 to August 13, 2022) is being jointly organized by the Union Ministry of Culture and P.L. Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Akademi in the city to pay tribute to our freedom fighters.

    • August 10 - World Lion day
    • The day aims to spread awareness of lions and the urgent need for their conservation. Lions are in danger of going extinct worldwide. Over five decades lion population has decreased by about 95%, hence there is a need to work for its conservation. First World Lion Day was celebrated in 2013.
    • August 9 - World Biofuel Day
    • This day is celebrated in memory of Sir Rudolf Diesel, inventor of the diesel engine. The day also raises awareness about the unconventional sources of fuels that act as substitutes for conventional fossil fuels.
