  • National News:
    • The Centre launched a common registration facility in 11 states and UTs to enable homeless people, destitute, migrants, and other eligible beneficiaries to apply for ration cards. The National Food Security Act (NFSA) provides maximum coverage for about 81.35 crore persons. At present, around 79.77 crore persons are given highly subsidized food grains under the Act. So, 1.58 crore more beneficiaries can be added.
  • Appointments
    • Nallathamby Kalaiselvi becomes the first woman director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). She is appointed for a period of two years. Nallathamby Kalaiselvi will replace Shekhar Mande who superannuated in April. She is currently the director of the CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CSIR-CECRI) at Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu. She became the first woman scientist to head the Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CSIR-CECRI). She will also hold the charge of secretary, Department of Scientific and Industrial research.
    • Indian chess legend and five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand was elected as deputy president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). Incumbent president Arkady Dvorkovich was re-elected for a second term.
    • Unity Small Finance bank (USFB) appoints Inderjit Camotra as the Managing Director and CEO. His appointment was approved by RBI and Unity bank's board.
    • Jagdeep Dhankhar becomes the 14th Vice President of India. He won 74.36 percent vote share (highest in the last six vice presidential elections) and received 528 votes while his opponent Margaret Alva got 182 votes. Jagdeep Dhankhar is a former governor of West Bengal.

  • Awards and Recognition
    • Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama was honoured with 'dPal rNgam Duston' award the highest civilian honour of Ladakh for his contribution to humanity, especially towards the union territory.
    • Indian American from Virginia, Aarya Walvekar has crowned Miss India USA in 2022 in New Jersey. Saumya Sharma, a second-year premedical student at the University of Virginia, was declared the first runner up and Sanjana Chekuri of New Jersey was the second runner-up.
  • Sports
    • Indian para table tennis player Bhavina Patel won the gold medal in women's class 3-5 over Nigeria's Ifechukwude Christiana Ikpeoyi at Commonwealth Games 2022. She has won a silver medal in Tokyo Paralympics.
    • Indian para table tennis player Sonalben Manubhai Patel won a bronze medal in the women's singles at Commonwealth Games 2022. She defeated England's, Sue Bailey.
    • Indian boxer Jaismine Lamboriya won a bronze medal in the women's 60kg lightweight category losing to England's Gemma Paige in the Commonwealth Games 2022.
    • Olympics silver medalist Ravi Kumar Dahiya won the gold medal in men's 57kg freestyle wrestling at Commonwealth Games 2022.
    • Nikhat Zareen won the gold medal in women's lightweight category boxing at Commonwealth Games 2022 after defeating Northern Ireland's Carly McNaul.
    • Indian boxer Amit Panghal wins a gold medal in the men's 51kg flyweight beating England's Kiaran McDonald by unanimous decision at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
    • Indian boxer Sagar Ahlawat won a silver medal in the super heavyweight (92kg) category after losing to England's Delicious Orie at Commonwealth Games 2022.
    • Indian boxer Nitu Ghanghas won her maiden gold medal in the women's 48kg category after defeating England's Demie Jade Resztan at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
    • India beats Bangladesh 5-2 to clinch the SAFF U20 Championship title. Striker Gurkirat Singh scored four goals which helped India to win the title in the final held at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar.
    • Chess prodigy V Pranav becomes India's 75th Grandmaster by winning a tournament in Romania. He won the Limpedea Open in Baia Mare, Romania to secure his third and final GM norm and attain the Grandmaster title.

    • August 7- National Handloom day
    • Every year on August 7th India celebrates National Handloom day to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905. This day highlights the contribution of the handloom industry to socio-economic development and creates awareness about the sector.
    • August 7- National Javelin Throw day
    • August 7 marks the day on which Neeraj Chopra scripted history by winning the Olympic gold medal at Tokyo Olympics. National Javelin throw day is organized by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).
    • August 8- Quit India Movement day
    • The resolution of the Quit India movement was passed by the congress leaders on August 8,1942 at the Mumbai session, following the failure of the Cripps Mission. The Bharat Chhodo Andolan marked the beginning of the nonviolent mass struggle for India's independence.
