Current Context: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said the government has set a target to reduce road accidents and deaths by half by 2024.

  • Nitin Gadkari said every year over 5 lakh road accidents kill 1.5 lakh people and injure over 3 lakh. The plan of the government is to reduce the accidents by 50 percent by 2024, during an event organized by NGO 'Jan Aakrosh Sanghatan' in Indore.
  • To remove black spots (accident-prone areas) on highways government has so far spent 25,000 crores.
  • The government with the help of the World Bank and Asian Development Bank is working on other projects worth Rs 15,000 crore. The state government will also be given funds from these schemes for efficient black spot rectification by them.
  • The government is going to launch the 'Bharat New Car Assessment Programme' to give five-star ratings to vehicles that are subjected to safety checks of world standards. Every vehicle before introducing to the market will have to carry out crash tests per these standards.
  • Nitin Gadkari also said film legend Amitabh Bachchan has assured to spread awareness among people on road safety.
