Current Context: India exported its first consignment of plant-based meat products from Nadiad (Kheda District), Gujarat to California, USA.
First Consignment of Plant-Based Meat Products Exported
  • The export was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Authority (APEDA).
  • The first consignment contained 5000 kg of plant-based meat under the National vegan food category.
  • According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the consignment consisted of hot and spicy strips, mini samosas, spring rolls, momos, grilled patty, and nuggets among other products.
  • The logistical support for the production of plant-based meat products was provided by the Kheda District Administration.
  • Plant-based meat products are directly obtained from plants with soybeans, quinoa, legumes, peas, etc. being the main ingredients.
  • These products have lesser cholesterol content and are rich in fiber content, which makes them very popular in high-income/developed countries.
  • APEDA is a government body responsible for the export of agricultural and processed food products and was established in 1986 with its headquarters in New Delhi. The current Chairperson of APEDA is Dr. M Angamuthu.
