NCC and UNEP Sign MoU

Current Context: The National Cadet Corps (NCC) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to tackle the issue of plastic pollution.

• The primary objective of the collaboration is to end plastic pollution and achieve the universal goal of clean water bodies through the “Tide Turners Plastic Challenge Programme” and “Puneet Sagar Abhiyan”.
• The MoU was signed between Resident Representative, UN World Food Programme Bishow Parajuli and Director-General NCC Lt. Gen. Gurbirpal Singh.
• The three-year agreement aims at consolidating, detailing, and developing cooperation and effectiveness to achieve sustainability in the field of environment.
• The Puneet Sagar Abhiyan is a pan-India campaign to raise awareness regarding plastic pollution and to make the seas and rivers of India plastic free. It was launched by NCC in 2021.
• The Tide Turners Plastic Challenge Programme is a global movement to curb plastic pollution which was launched by the UNEP in 2019.
