Current Context: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted two successful test flights of the Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) at Chandipur, Odisha.
Very Short Range Air Defence System
  • VSHORADS missiles are capable of neutralizing low-altitude aerial threats at short ranges.
  • VSHORADS is a Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD) and is designed and developed indigenously by Hyderabad-based DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI), in collaboration with Indian Industry Partners, and other DRDO laboratories.
  • VSHORADS missile is equipped with the latest technologies viz. miniaturized Reaction Control System (RCS) and Integrated Avionics.
  • The missile comes with a dual thrust solid motor propeller and a highly optimized design which ensures easy portability.
  • DRDO is a government-owned military research and development institution that was established under the Ministry of Defense in 1958. Its headquarters is in New Delhi. The current Chairperson of DRDO is G Satheesh Reddy.
