Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and NAFED launched the ‘Millets Experience Centre (MEC)’

Current Context: The Millets Experience Centre (MEC) is a joint initiative by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) to promote millets as a healthy and sustainable food option.
Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and NAFED launched the ‘Millets Experience Centre (MEC)’
  • The first MEC was launched at Dilli Haat, INA, New Delhi on April 29, 2023 by Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar.
  • The MEC offers a unique dining and shopping experience for customers who can enjoy various dishes and products made from millets, such as millets dosa, millets pasta, millets snacks, etc.
  • The MEC also showcases the local millet startups and their innovations. The MEC is part of India’s celebration of the International Year of Millets (IYM 2023), which was declared by the United Nations General Assembly upon India’s proposal supported by 72 countries.
  • The aim of IYM 2023 is to raise awareness on the environmental, health and economic benefits of millet farming and consumption
