Current Context: According to the Times Higher Education (THE) ‘Young University Rankings (YUR)-2023’, Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU), Kerala has emerged as top among Indian universities and secured 77th position globally.

  • It is followed by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati at 80th and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune at 83rd.
  • The rankings list the world’s best universities that are 50 years old or younger. The table is based on the same 13 performance indicators as the flagship THE World University Rankings, but the weightings have been adjusted to give less weight to reputation.
  • The top three universities in the world are Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Paris Sciences et Lettres – PSL Research University Paris.
  • Some of the factors that influence the performance of young universities are their internationalisation strategies, their research collaborations, their demographic challenges, and their curricular diversification.
