  • National:
    • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has approved proposals worth Rs 7,800 crore to enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces.

    • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has recently issued new disclosure norms for Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) holding high Indian equity Assets Under Management (AUM) . These norms will come into effect from November 1st.
    • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the voluntary amalgamation of Twin Cities Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd with Kranti Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd. The scheme of amalgamation will come into effect from August 23, 2023.
    • Infosys, a global leader in next-generation digital services and consulting, has announced a three-year partnership with tennis star Rafael Nadal as an ambassador for the brand and Infosys’ Digital Innovation.
    • On August 15th, the Indian Navy successfully conducted the maiden test drop of an indigenous Search and Rescue Kit (SARK). The Made-in-India SARK was tested from the Boeing P-8I long-range patrol aircraft.
    • According to the second edition of the State of India’s Birds (SoIB) report, over 60% of bird species in India have experienced a decline over the past 25 years.
    • Magnus Carlsen, the world number one chess player, defeated Indian Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa in the final of the 2023 FIDE Chess World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan. The final lasted three days, with two draws on Tuesday and Wednesday before Carlsen emerged victorious.
    • The United World Wrestling (UWW) has indefinitely suspended the membership of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) due to the federation’s failure to conduct the necessary elections.
    • The Uttar Pradesh Government launched the Manav Sampada Portal on August 24, 2023, with the aim of bringing transparency to administrative procedures. This initiative intends to bring the activities of officers and employees from various departments into the public domain through the portal.
    • Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal launched the Tele-Law 2.0 initiative in New Delhi. This initiative integrates Tele-Law and Nyaya Bandhu App to ensure access to justice.
    • Indore has been named the best Smart City and Madhya Pradesh has been chosen as the top state for exemplary performance in the Smart Cities Mission. The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry announced the winners of the India Smart Cities Award Contest (ISAC) 2022 on Friday.
    • HDFC Capital Advisors and House of Abhinandan Lodha (HoABL) have partnered to create a joint venture platform with investments of over 1,500 crore. The platform will focus on plotted developments and low-rise projects in key property markets in India.
    • Mastercard has signed up as one of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) top-tier sponsors for the 2023 World Cup in India, which will be held between October 5 and November 19. With this, Mastercard joins ICC’s other global partners MRF Tyres, Booking.com, Aramco and Emirates.
  • Economy:
    • IIT Bombay has recently partnered with HSBC to pursue technological advancements towards making green hydrogen production more efficient, cost-effective, and scalable. The focus of this partnership will be on innovative projects that will help position green hydrogen.
    • The Trade and Investment Ministers of G20 nations, which together generate 75% of the world’s trade flows, agreed to map global value chains, integrate small businesses with them and ease trade documentation
    • The Indian government has imposed a 20% export duty on parboiled rice with immediate effect to curb a surge in shipments since July 20 when it banned exports of non-basmati white rice . This export duty will be in force until October 15, 2023.
  • World: 
    • Germany has developed a device for the visually impaired to assist them in the sport of shooting. This device has been brought to India for the first time and given to the visually impaired in Pune.
    • China and Bhutan held the first meeting of the newly set-up joint technical team on the delimitation of their disputed boundary. The 13th Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on the China-Bhutan boundary issues was held in Beijing from August 21 to August 24.
  • Sports:
    • Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic champion, made history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal in the World Athletics Championships with a throw of 88.17m in the men’s javelin final.
    • The Indian women’s hockey team began their campaign at the Women’s Asian Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifier with a 7-2 victory over Malaysia on Friday. India made an attacking start to their first match, scoring in the third minute through captain Navjot Kaur.
    • The Indian Women’s blind cricket team has created history by becoming the first team to qualify for the finals of the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) World Games 2023 in Birmingham.
