  • Sports:
    • Global football body FIFA announced that it would be suspending the All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect. The decision was "due to undue influence from third parties," constituting a serious violation of the FIFA statutes.
  • State News
    • Punjab Chief Minister Baghwant Mann dedicates 75 Aam Aadmi Clinics to the people of the state to mark 75 years of Indian Independence. These Mohalla clinics will offer free of cost service for 100 types of clinical tests and also provides medicine to patients for free. These clinics will have four staff members including an MBBS doctor, and a laboratory technician.
    • Andhra Pradesh governor Biswabhusan Harichandan unveiled a 30-feet tall mural statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the freedom fighters building in Vijayawada. The program was organized by Sarvodaya Trust on the occasion of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
    • Punjab government approved the 'One MLA - One Pension' bill. According to the provisions of the new law, an MLA will be given a pension for only one term no matter how many times the leader is elected.

  • National News
    • Environment minister Bhupendra Yadav announced India has added 11 more wetlands to the list of Ramsar sites, thus bringing the total tally to 75 sites. Out of the 11 new sites, four are in Tamil Nadu, three in Odisha, two in Jammu and Kashmir, and one each in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. During this year a total of 28 sites have been declared as Ramsar sites. Tamil Nadu has a maximum number of Ramsar sites at 14 followed by Uttar Pradesh which has 10 sites on the list.
    • For the first time, made-in-India guns were used for a ceremonial 21-shot salute to the tricolor at the Red Fort on Independence day. Earlier British guns were used for the ceremonial salute. For the first time, M-17 helicopters showered flowers at the Red Fort during independence day. The indigenous howitzer gun used for the ceremonial salute was designed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
    • The Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI) has restored a 700-year-old paper made in 1320. It is notably the oldest paper in Maharashtra.
    • On the occasion of India's independence day celebration on August 15, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) deployed an indigenously built counter-drone system near the Red Fort area in Delhi. This counter-drone will tackle any threats from small drones in the capital. This system can detect and deactivate drones of any size within a radius of around 4 km.
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed people from Red Fort in New Delhi. PM listed out five pledges 'Panchpran' for every Indian to fulfill the dream of our freedom fighters by 2047. The Five pledges for 2047 are having developed India, removing any signs of servility, pride in heritage, unity, and fulfilling our duties.
    • Indian Railways celebrated India's independence by flying the tricolor atop Noney bridge in Manipur. The bridge being constructed by Indian Railways will become the tallest girder rail bridge in the world. The 141 meters long bridge is being constructed over river Iring.

    • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has cleared the appointment of senior Nagaland cadre IAS officer Piyush Goyal as National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) CEO. Goyal is currently posted as an additional secretary (AS) in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

    • On the occasion of the nation's 76th year of Independence, celebrated as Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the largest lender in the nation, the State Bank of India (SBI), introduced a unique term deposit program called "Utsav Deposit." This fixed deposit scheme has higher interest rates and is only available for a limited time.
    • Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited announced the launch of Kotak Crème, a lifestyle-focused corporate salary account, offering an upgraded banking experience to new-age professionals working with eminent corporates.
